An ancient craft, a modern question — and the journey that helped INNERGY find its own way of making incense.

Living in Shanghai means learning to live with speed.
For INNERGY founder Ray, and later for the wider INNERGY team, the city became both a source of inspiration and a constant reminder of how quickly modern life moves — long working days, crowded streets, glowing screens, and very little space to pause.
Incense gradually became a small counterpoint to that rhythm.
Lighting a stick did not make the city quieter. It did not remove the work, the messages, or the noise outside.
But for a few moments, it created a different sense of time.
A flame. A trail of smoke. A scent slowly unfolding through the room.

For Ray, it became a simple way to pause and return to himself. As the team began talking more about this personal experience, a larger question emerged:
What could the ancient culture of incense offer modern urban life today?
Not as nostalgia.
Not as decoration.
And not as an escape from modern life.
But as something that could genuinely belong within it.
“We were not looking for a way out of modern life. We were looking for a way back to ourselves within it.”
— RAY, FOUNDER OF INNERGY
In June 2024, that question took Ray and the INNERGY team beyond Shanghai.
Together, they began exploring Shanghai, Xiamen, Quanzhou, and other places connected to Chinese incense-making traditions, meeting experienced makers and learning how different workshops understood natural materials, proportion, texture, burning, and scent.
The deeper they went, the clearer one thing became:
Chinese incense is not simply about making something smell pleasant.
A formula may begin with woods, herbs, flowers, resins, and other natural aromatic materials, but its final character depends on how those ingredients are understood and brought together.
How should one wood support another?
How much warmth is enough before a scent becomes too heavy?
How can a fragrance remain present without overwhelming the room?
These questions became central to the development process.
Rather than simply reproducing traditional incense, INNERGY wanted to understand the thinking behind it — and explore how that knowledge could be translated into something that felt natural in a modern apartment, beside a laptop, during a quiet evening, or in the small spaces between one part of the day and the next.
Eventually, INNERGY began working with four Chinese incense-making studios, each bringing more than 30 years of experience in traditional incense craftsmanship.

The collaboration became a process of testing, adjusting, and learning together.
The team explored natural aromatic materials, different proportions, scent intensity, burning behavior, and the physical form of the incense itself.
Some blends needed to become quieter.
Others needed more depth.
Some traditional profiles needed to feel lighter and easier to live with in contemporary spaces.
Throughout the process, one principle became increasingly clear:
The incense should respect the material rather than disguise it.
Natural woods should still feel like woods.
Resins should keep their dry, complex character.
Flowers should soften a composition without turning into artificial perfume.
The goal was never to create the loudest scent in the room.
It was to create something balanced enough to become part of everyday life.
One of the forms that emerged from this exploration was INNERGY’s compressed square incense.
Made without a bamboo core, its clean geometry gave the incense a more substantial material presence while still feeling precise, minimal, and contemporary.
For the team, it became more than a product format.
It became a visual expression of what INNERGY was trying to do:
Traditional material. Modern form.
Not to recreate the visual language of the past, but to carry forward what still felt meaningful within incense culture — attention to material, proportion, patience, and ritual — while allowing the object itself to belong naturally in modern life.
Looking back, the most important result of this journey was not one particular scent or one particular incense shape.
It was discovering what INNERGY wanted to be.

Through conversations with craftsmen, time spent around raw materials, repeated adjustments to formulas, and countless sticks burned in different rooms and moments, Ray and the INNERGY team gradually found the brand’s own rhythm.
What began as a personal question became a shared belief:
Incense does not need to take us somewhere else.
Sometimes, its value is simply in helping us notice where we already are.
And that idea became part of the foundation of INNERGY:
Not escape. Return.
COME BACK TO YOURSELF.
